In my experience the results are just as good with a decent Vax or other carpet cleaner.

We bought one for about £120 some years ago and have used it clean carpets in a 3 bed house we were selling, twice clean a 3 bed temporary rental house plus once clean the 4 bed house we then bought.

It is hard work but a lot cheaper than getting the professionals in.

My opinion, others will probably say different.

I have always used a Vax for years with great results like yourself and find that the saving is rewarding in itself, BUT if you can afford to bring in the Professionals then enjoy. each to their own.
  • Had a recent experience myself with this, hope this helps...

Need to watch as there have been different types I have had in personally. Last few years had two, one chap rocked up with what looked like a normal vacuum cleaner, did the job, moved nothing, once dried could still see the stains, could have done better myself. Second time had two chaps rock up, they plugged their massive extendable hose with space age looking adapter into their van, yes their van and got cleaning (machine was in the back). They moved everything between them, even offered to move the piano, no, I declined, i was in a good mood ;-). Best clean ever, looked like new!

Summary - best ask what machine they are using, how many people are coming and if they move stuff to clean under things if all yes, the price can't be that bad I guess. Ours was 1 carpet 20x10 =40 pounds

nearly as funny as KS's quoted post, as you don't actually know where the OP is
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

reddogcarpetcleaning.com are in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Will you come and give me a free estimate for my house in Sussex? :D
  • I have worked for a couple of carpet cleaning companies in the last 8 years. Neither are national/franchises which are very expensive and dont necessarily give a good service. The first, I was an estimator travelling around giving quotes. I also went on a couple of training courses with the NCCA. They used Truck mount machines which is a hose attached to a van outside. Usually more expensive than the companies who use portable machines. The company I work for now has a very good reputation, uses portables and the price of the carpet cleaning on the first post would be £100. (The other company would of been around £180. I give quotes on the phone after asking the potential customer a lot of questions, ie. How dirty?, stains?, rooms larger than average? although there is a guide price on our website which we try to stick to as much as possible.
One thing I find when talking to customers is the big difference in customers expectations. I get asked things like "will all the stains come out?" This is impossible to say as although we use stain removers etc, there are ocassions where despite our best efforts to remove a stain it will not budge. Also we get customers who book us and are not entirely honest and book in for a regular clean, not asking for any extra deep cleaning and complain like hell when the carpets are still dirty (They are usually filthy when we turn up, the type that I would probably pull up and replace) Luckily for us we have very good feedback on a website that checks out companies to weed out the cowboys (and yes I hear the horror stories) in the last year we have over 700 excellent comments which in turn makes customers happy to trust us. We are not a member of the NCCA as they are extremely expensive to belong to and to be honest we are doing OK without them thank you :)

Depends whose perception of good we use.
Use a pro, but beware of cons and cowboys.
Some add VAT to the bill (illegal).
Some just increase the price at the doorstep.
Some charge for treatments as extras.
Portables of a good build will match truckmount results if used correctly.
I`ve followed some truckmount operators on and wondered if they had it turned on.
A lot depends on the person doing the job.
After 13 years in this business i`ve seen and heard of some horrors.
The quoted price is in the right ball park if they`re any good, Google is your friend, unless you can get a personal recommendation.
I can only reiterate what Fletchcov has said.
An old style Vax is probably the best machine to do a quick clean up if you`re really skint. A certain brand being touted in supermarkets should be avoided at all costs
