Upgrading phone

Hi there,

I have a Nokai 6600 and would like tp upgrade to a Nokia 6680 (when it's out, does anyone know?). I am currently on a Vodafone tariff 200 mins free, 50 text. I have been told that my account will move from Singlepoint to Vodafone soon and when I go to the Singlepoint web site now it redirects to the Vodafone site (though I cannot sign it as my account number is not the right length... or something like that).

What is the best/cheapest way to upgrade? Last time I wanted a new phone they quoted £100-200 pounds, but I could get the phone for £20 if I got a brand new contract (so did that). The disadvantage to this though is that I lost my number and don't want to do that again if I can avoid it.

I would have lost my number anyway if I moved from a Vodafone monthly tariff to a Vodafone monthly tariff (illogicially) but as I will be moving onto Vodafon'es 3G network I get to keep my number.

Any advice much appreciated?

K

The reason new customers get such good deals on phones is because the network has no way of knowing how much they'll actually make from them unless they get them on their network in the first place (it seems they don't pay attention to whether you take out a new contract instead).

For example, if you are on a £30 per month tariff and don't spend over that (or not by very much) then the network is making very little from you by the time it has paid for the calls and texts you're using and subsidised your phone price... if however, you were on a £30 per month tariff and your bills were coming in at £200 (for ease of figures) then you'd probably get a decent deal on an upgrade because the network knows you're making it some money.

If you definitely want to stay with Vodafone then it may be possible to port your number to Virgin and then back onto a new contract with Vodafone, but this can take a few months so isn't really ideal if you want your new contract now.

Another way is to call the retentions department at Vodafone and say that you're thinking of leaving... some people get lucky and get a good deal on upgrades etc.

I normally change my number every year to get better deals on both the phone and the actual contract (they normally have extra texts or double minutes for free etc.)... although it seems like a hassle I normally just send out a text to everyone in my phone book and change the answer phone message on my old SIM (which I turn to PAYG) telling people what my new number is.

The Nokia 6680 is already out in various places at the moment, here for example, and the vodafone website says it's expected in April so you shouldn't have too long to wait but I'm not sure how cheap you'll actually get it this early in its release.

Deals are better for new customers because the network "has you" for atleast 12 months, paying usually £10 min per month and then calls on top so that subsidides the price of the phone.

The 6680 is a good phone so will be expensive, i'd say equal to the 6630 which i was quoted £220 as an upgrade price.

As you want to keep your number, the best thing to do is get a upgrade quote for the 6680 and if you don't like it, then say your not happy and will leave them if they don't do something to keep you, they will always try and keep you but you have to push for a good deal.

If they don't offer you a good deal then just port to Vodafone PAYG then go into a vodafone store and say you want to port your payg onto contract and get the 6680, that way it will be cheaper and you'll be starting over again on contract.

    good luck
