Best way to take money to New Zealand

My youngest son is off to New Zealand in a couple of months for a month. What is the best way to take money please? He doesn't want to rely on just his bank debit card in case it gets lost or stolen.
We were thinking of a card that could be pre loaded with money and that we could top up for him if needed. I think the post office used to do one. He'll have some New Zealand money in cash to start off with too.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Just peruse the current threads for the latest info. NZ is no different from most other places. So you don't need a separate thread.0
