Hi all,
my mum bought a great new lawnmower (toro) which I will cut our grass with.
I was thinking i would like to try and cut other peoples grass as well, (£!!)
What do you all think I could charge for a service like this?
Where do you think it would be good to advertise?
I live in a small country town.
thanks

What are the running costs of the mower?
Try card up in: DIY shop/garden centre/local shopping mall/supermarket
What's the local competition like?
How keen are you to make money? (i.e. what's the least you could charge and still feel it's worth your while?)
Are there any health and safety/legal issues about doing this for money?0 -
You could always get some leaflets done and do a local leaflet drop.Nothing to see here, move along.0

Have you a local free ads paper? Might be worthwhile putting an ad in there to see if you get some business0

Are your circumstances such, as you would have to declare your earnings for income tax and would you adequate insurance?

I think this would be primarily a service for the elderly.
Do you have an Old Peoples day centre nearby.
What about the local Doctors/opticians. Lots of elderly use them.
Usually, once you have a couple of customers they will do the advertising for you - as long as you do a good job and don't charge too much.
I don't think many would want to pay more than a Tenner tops, per cut but you could do this every two weeks."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

Do you live anywhere near me? I had a *gardener* (chap with a van and some tools) who cut my grass from time to time, but got bored of it, and spent more time with me chatting and eating HM cake, which defeated the object of freeing up my time  .
He charged £15 for mine, which took him about 1 hour, including strimming the edges (but not eating cake
).
In our small country town, people advertise in the paper shop window, Parish mag, and local papers. Flyers also can go down well. If you're good, reliable, and keep people informed about when you'll be arriving, you'll probably have a profitable business.

You can't really do this with an electric mower... if it rains you'd be stuffed.
The amount you can charge depends on your area. I'd say a max of £10 in mine. Think about inducements "£5 first cut" offer. You need a car, as well.
Good luck:)“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I'm not elderly

When I went back to work when the small Penguins were settled in school, I didn't have time for mowing the lawn. I love gardening, but hate mowing - it's like hoovering in the open air
I paid someone the equivalent of my take home pay, as I'd rather do an hour in the office, than spend an hour mowing the lawn.

thanks for all your replies, I would just want to do a few peoples grass a week, charge £10 a go. It wouldn't be to make a living just some extra money cos I like cutting the grass. Don't think I would have to declare this earning or worry about health & safety.
I think I will put a card up at the Post Office.0 -
I live in a small village and renting a property. A local man cut my grass; he calls in and checks it every 2 or 3 weeks and he decides when its ready for a cut. Usually takes him between 1 and 1.5 hours. Its not good lawn, more like meadow grass which was just left to grow when the bungalow was refurbished so its not an easy job but he uses a petrol brush cutter. He also takes whatever clippings are left after my green wheely bin is full. He charges me £15 and I consider it well worth the money.
be a good idea if you checked out what competition you will have - there are several in this area - and then have a think about what sort of jobs you can take on; I would suspect you wouldnt want to cut my grass!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
