how do i find out if i have buildings insurance on my house?

i thought i was covered but when i recently looked in my folder that contains all my buildings/contents insurance stuff it seems i might not!
the most recent buildings insurance paperwork in my folder said my cover ended on 31-03-12. there's no paperwork for anything more recent than that.
it's possible i could have renewed with that company or got cover with a different company, but i've somehow lost the paperwork. although i'm usually very good at keeping paperwork in order...thanks to OCD!
i will contact that buildings insurance company to see if i'm still covered with them, but if i'm not how can i find out if i have a current buildings insurance policy?

    There is no central database.

Any clues from your bank account?
  • Direct Debits are a good place to start

Renewals are normally automatic and if you don't tell them you want to cancel it will get renewed!

Your previous insurer will be able to say straight away if you are covered or not.

If you are not covered and there has been no claim then just set up a new policy!

I agree that firstly contact that company as they probably will have contacted you before the insurance ended to see if you wanted to stay with them. If not with them then look at your bank account to see if you have a debit for the approx amount in March/April.

Unlike Motor there is no legal obligation for home insurers to update any central databases. Many do insert information into the Claims & Underwriting Exchange (CUE) but by no means all.

Check bank/ card statements from around renewal time or alternatively contact last years insurer as if you forgot to do anything they probably auto renewed you as others suggested

I would look at the money side of things as others have said (after checking the last company).
If you took out insurance you would have had to have paid for it somehow, so you are either looking for a direct debit or a lump sum around that time.
