Debt - Interest Charges

In 2008 a letter landed on my door from a debt recovery company (Link Financial) it was the normal threatening this and that. I new what the debt was for.... we all makes mistakes so anyway.
I arrange my terms of payment not theres, anyway in August this year I thought it was payed off as I did my calculations and was chuffed I had it cleared. I wrote to said company asking them to confirm this. I got a lettter back saying I still owed roughly about £400, it turns out they had been adding interest over this period.
Can they do this?
And secondly when I negotiated my repayment terms I was told there was no interest to be paid, it weas just the amount shown on the letter. I have no proof of this other than a phone call 4 years ago (oh and no name)
Any suggestions or have I gotta just pay the rest off.
Thanks in advance.

Whether they can charge interest would depend what the debt was for, and assuming it was consumer credit, what the original agreement you signed with the original creditor stated.
What sort of debt was it? how long ago did you originally default? does it appear on your credit file at all?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
