In my experience the best rates I've found have been marks and spencer.

thanks guys... so if i log onto travelex purchase online i should be able to pick up from bham airport...?

Yes, but just make sure you take the debit or credit card that you used to pay online.

Numpty here forgot, luckily I was only away for a few days but there was no way I was exchanging cash with them at the airport as the rate was rubbish I got a decent rate at the bank oversea.

there seems to be some confusion here with mention of Marks and Spencers as the best rate  ect

last time i ordered money from Travelex to pick up B/ham airport i checked out as many other rates as i could for the price match. Nothing got near TEG (Thomas global exchange).

i have yet to find a better method of squeezing every last drop of currency for you £ for money in your hand ready for when you land than the Method posted on this site by memebr PIN
For price matching: order through Travelex online as you would do normally, then call up TEG (02072401214 or 02078281880) and get a quote re their exchange rate. Email Travelex: customerservices@travelex.com (must be done on the same day) stating the following: your Travelex reference number, your currency quote from TEG (and the fact you got it from TEG) and your address (Travelex will send you a cheque refunding the difference). Also Travelex normally acknowledge receipt of your email. Full terms and conditions of the Travelex Price Promise are on the Travelex website.

i have now used this method five times and got a price match cheque from Travelex every time promptly. Travelex at Birmingham Airport is on the left when you walk through the main departure doors. just make sure you have the card you payed with online and your Passport . a print out of your online purchase reciept is handy. i used my First Direct debit and had no fees for the privledge of buying with them, ( i checked before hand with FD as well)
don,t just think you can show up at the Travelex desk on the day you go, their the walk off the street rate is very bad !!!! you must order online and then designate the day and airport / branch you will collect your money ( up to 3 months in advance i beleive) and then price match to TEG if you want the best possible rate.

the differneces are huge:shocked:    when i picked up $ in Jan ordered just after B of E intrest rise, i got a rate $1.96 to the £ using price check method above . Lloyds tsb quoted me $1.86 and had the nerve to say they were offering me a good commission free rate :rotfl: . Post office was $1.89 , M and S $1.91 and my local travel agent could only go to $1.92 even after i told them the rate i could get and they upped their orginal quote of $1.88.

so going with my bank i would have got $1860 for my grand

i got $1960 after price check . that extra $100 will get me 2 top quality meals for 2 at least in New england . well worth the price of a 1 min phone call and sending off a E-mail i think you will agree.

they only other method worth doing is the Nationwide current account ATM method.

also unless you are using the Nationwide current account debit card , you will get hit by your bank for withdrawing money abroad from as ATM, even if it does not show up on the statement.

to late now but get a Post office credit card and or Nationwide current account for your next trip
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

I would definitely advise Travelex. You can phone them and your currency will either be delivered to your home address (if you have the time) or alternatively you can pick it up at your departure point.

If you can help it don't use a credit card as this will incur a cash transaction fee of at least 2%,

    Have a great holiday.

    A word of warning:

A number of banks charge you a foreign exchange fee if you use their debit card to buy currency anywhere other than at that bank.

Barclays for instance charge 2% up to a maximum of £4.50 if you buy currency with your Connect debit card from anywhere else (eg Travelex, M&S, Thomas Cook and other banks etc)

This should be illegal as it doesn't relate to the cost incurred by the bank, in the same way as high bank charges!!

If you are looking for an easy transaction the Post Office offers a competitiive rate for most popular currencies.

does anyone have a comprehensive list of the rougues that try this . your right it should be illegal . if they think this would make me buy from them think again , i will withdraw my money direct and take it to the Travelex desk if it comes to it.

well i can confirm First Direct don,t ( or least did not when i last did this in January)
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

I tend to put all my cash in my Nationwide account that I opened for the purpose, they don't charge to withdraw cash abroad and for me it is safer than carrying large amounts of cash, I just get out what I need each day.

And then you'll get a poor rate coz the good travelex rate is only if you pay in advance.
