Persimmon homes

Can anyone help me? We found a new home with Persimmons and their mortgage people ran through how much we could borrow and they would part exchange our house for theirs. We were told they would pay so much for our house. (5 thousand less than it was up for). They would also pay 5% deposit on the new house as a special deal for this particular weekend. We duly went along to the site, picked out kitchen bathroom etc. and paid a £500 deposit. The house was near to completion at this time. 10 days later their mortgage company contact us to say we could not now have a mortgage because I worked permanent bank work. We asked for a full refund of our £500. This has now been going on since July 7th. I phone yet again on Monday to be told my money was in the post. Not received it yet. Phone again this morning and was assured it was in the post. My question is it has been sitting in their bank account for 2 months can I ask for interest as well. When I do get it returned. Should I just put it straight in the solicitors hands to deal with?

  • I'm not sure of the delay, this isn't good and if this represents the way the company operates then it's one to avoid.

You could ask for interest but for example 3% pa interest on £500 would work out at £2.50 for the two months, and you would pay tax on this if you're a tax payer.

TBH, I'm pretty surprised they agreed to give it back at all - so if you get it, I'd take that as a massive victory and let the interest go!

Well, the deal was off because Persimmon's mortgage lender would not lend to OP - OP having provided their details as part of the reservation, I believe. In these circumstances, money should be refunded in full.

Ah, thanks. I overlooked that it was persimmon's lender, not OP's.
