http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19562235
George Osborne told Parliament that Sir Mervyn King's successor will be announced by the end of the year following a "fair and open" application process.

The job will be advertised in the press on Friday, and the closing date for applications is 8 October.

Anyone fancy it?

    I would but I'm probably over-qualified.

  • The pay is not enough to cover the mortgage on my 2 bed flat.
  • I'm not very good at fractions and percentages but I recon that would be an advantage!, when it comes to denial to the media. :)

I thought once the job add comes out we could all have a go at writing our own personal statement on how we would do the job if recruited.
    I think....
  • Dear Mr Osborne

I have pleasure in enclosing my CV for your consideration of the impending job as Governor of the Bank of England.

The first 15 pages cover my 43 years as treasurer of Loughton Dominoes Club, which I'm sure will reassure you of my financial acumen. During the recession of 1990/92, when the club was in financial difficulties, I promised to keep the subscription charge increases below 5%. I think you will find that the actual increases of 18%, 22%, and 15% respectively were very much 'near the mark' and the minor discrepencies were fully explained in my letter to the Club President.

During this time, my 'day job' was at Loughton Printing Ltd. where I used all sort of printing presses, and know the printing trade inside out. I propose working your own presses 24/7 for as long as possible.

But I appreciate that many candidates will have equally impressive backgrounds, which is why I put forward the following ideas, after considerable thought, to explain what new ideas I would bring to the job.

    1. Research tells me that the Bank of England doesn't have many customers. We should offer (in honour of the previous governor) a Merv-Memorial Platinum ISA paying 2% flat, with a bonus of 2% for 12 months (transfers in not accepted).

    2. To help the economy, we should offer mortgages for first time buyers. Here's the novel idea. Instead of just offering 100% of valuation, we should offer 120%. Our security will be 100% guaranteed because house prices always go up innit?

    3. I would propose to move the bank from its current high-rent premises in Threadneedle Street. These premises lend themselves easily to conversion to 153 luxury apartments, which would be snapped up by BTL landlords very quickly and provide extra revenue for the treasury. The bank itself can operate from portakabins in Kingston-upon-Hull where the staff will come much cheaper, and the jobs will provide much needed regeneration of the area.

    4. Finally, I am told that the bank only charges 0.50% interest. With respect, George, this sounds rather low when even the Halifax charges 4% or thereabouts. My very first job, therefore, would be to increase the rate to 5% in order to secure a much higher income for the bank. If the ISA takes off (as I think it will) then we may have to increase this to 6% or 7% before too long.

Please let me know when and where I need to attend for the interview.

    Yours etc.
  • Pearcy1983 would be a good choice for it along with that miserable graham as his deputy
  • what i don't understand is why this is being advertised in the economist.

    either:

    (i) the BoE is wasting a load of money on advertising a role when all they needed to do is issue a press release which they knew would be reported throughout the mainstream press for free; or

(ii) the economist has offered to carry the BoE advert for free, on the basis that the press release mentions the economist and they know they'll get a load of publicity, in which case the BoE is needlessly giving the economist a load of free advertising.

either way, what was wrong with just putting the advert on their website...perhaps the economist has paid them but i doubt it.
  • The pay is not enough to cover the mortgage on my 2 bed flat.

I believe one of the perks of the job is a subsidised mortgage. Base Rate minus 5%. An overhang of the 70's, which for some reason Merv has been reluctant to change.
  • what i don't understand is why this is being advertised in the economist...

Well they couldn't advertise it in The Sun could they? Ed Balls might see it and apply.

    I'm tempted to apply.

I must have been really young when I got my first John Bull printing set.

QE printy printy feels like a natural progression then.

I believe you also need to write a letter to that Mr Osborne bloke every so often. It seems like a good waste of printy printy ink to me.
