Bristol - Frenchay Area

I'm going to renting in the Bristol area in the coming months due to a new job - i'll be staying 4 nights and commuting home at the weekend.
Luckily for me my employer are paying my accomodation costs for the first year (up to £8k) which is a nice position to be in.
I've never been to Bristol before so this is virgin territory for me. I will be working in the Frenchay area, near the UWE site.
Can any Bristolians give me an idea of the areas to steer clear of and the best area's close to the Frenchay area. Also what i should be expecting to pay for a one bedroom apartment/flat (i'm not even averse to a studio apartment). Are there any good local ad papers/websites for private renting that could be recommended (i am averse to paying agency fees)
Also if you know of any cheap (sub£30/night) b&b's in the area, that would be appreciated. So as not to advertise you could PM these details if you have them.
Cheers in advance!!

If you're working near Uwe and want walking distance, search stoke park in rightmove. New ish builds, nice area with countryside walks on your door step, Uwe has buses to a lot of places, close to parkway station and sainsbury which is all walking distance. Above all you're close to motorway for network commute0

what is Kingswood like as an area?0

Bradley Stoke is definitely your best bet - all new builds and cheap as it's a little way out of the centre. From Filton, into Bradley Stoke and UWE it's then just fields.
For a bit more personality then Filton Avenue is a great shout (Filton Avenue leads to Gloucester Rd which is the main road into Bristol - famous for the many pubs making it an ideal pub crawl location, although I appreciate this isn't for you). This is also the main bus route to UWE so if you did live there, getting to work in the morning would be a breeze.
Kingswood is fine and cheap much like Fishponds which is also close by. Nothing that side of the river is really dodgy, St Pauls and Easton are the only places to really avoid on this side and even then I've never had an issue.0 -

Thanks for the info, much appreciated0 -
Are you driving?
Stokes Park, Horfield, and Filton are all close, but as they are near UWE are quite studenty - especially in the flats.
A bit quieter (but a bit further out) Bradley Stoke is nice, as is Emersons Green and Downend (particularly Bromley Heath) and these are all off the ring road so have really easy access to the UWE area.0 -

is the ring-road around uwe still as much a disaster area as it was 4 or 5 years ago? (car-share lane etc):rotfl:
I'd recommend a bike!0
