Is it Legal to Work for Another Employer During My Christmas Holidays

Hi All,
I was hoping if anyone could tell me if it is ok to work for someone else during my xmas holidays? I would only be working the 2 weeks or so which I will be off from my main job and then return to it as usual. It would be a great way to make extra cash and the time to start asking retailers is pretty much now.
Thanks

Is there a clause in your contract saying that you can't or that you need to let them know?
If not, then go ahead. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
I would check your contract. I know mine has a clause that i have to disclose any other jobs.0

I know I used to have a clause in mine that 2 weeks leave would be taken for rest and recuperation (ie you could work in the rest of it)0

It is entirely legal to work for another employer. The thing to watch out for is as the others have said, whether the contract forbids it.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Some of the teaching assistants in my son's school are employed by the play scheme during the holidays. Others are employed directly by families to look after their disabled children for a certain number of hours per week.
It is worth checking your contract to see if there is a clause which disallows this.0 -

You also have to watch the fact that your holiday is still under contract so any other job should not be the same time period as the normal job.
so you should only do another ob that could be done if you were working.
Unless the employer agrees.0 -
Remember too that you will get hammered for tax!!0

Why do people still spout this uninformed nonsence
The tax is the same as if you earned the extra in your normal job.
Chances are the NI will be less and that means LESS TAX overall.0 -
As long as you are not working for a competitor or something. I wouldn't imagine 2 weeks over Christmas would be something most companies would be too bothered about, but as said, double check your contract.

Yes, but a lot of people don’t grasp how the system works. Even though it is “fair” and when explained properly, a lot fo people who take on a second job, can be quite shocked when they see the deductions on their first pay slip, especially if the job is NMW with p/t hours!
Back to the OP, I take it when you mention “ retail”, you are talking about applying for Christmas temp vacancies in shops? If this is the case please be aware than most (if not all) retailers will not hire you for 2 weeks. They will want you to commit from Oct – Jan.0
