It depends on who supplies your water, round here its mainly in the footpath for new builds but could also be in a garden if its a meter option fit as they replace the old stoptap , if not it will be internal where the supply enters the property.
If you are unsure ring the water co. they will have a record of the meter location.0 -
Ours is in the front garden just short of the edging. Our last house the meter was just outside the edging on the pavement.
With this talk about meters being installed automatically on houses being sold, the water authority would have to ask if they could have access if they wanted to do work on your property, surely.
My query is if all pipes etc on your property are your responsibilty, (for which you can now get insured against) if anything should happen to the meter are you then liable, as the meter is the property of the water board?0 -

I suppose it's like the electricity or gas meter i.e. you don't tamper with it unless you want to face prosecution.
I'm currently trying to find out what happens if the water company want to access your property internally and you are never in. I don't see why I should take my holiday from work for the local water company to supply me with a water meter when I've not specifically asked for one. They are welcome to put the meter externally and leave me a card but looking at my property, a flat, I don't think they can.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

If they get no true reads for a long time they can take out a warrant to enter the property, thats round here depends on the water co tho.0 -

The meter is the responsability of the water company, they do not need permission if its emergency work that needs to be undertaken, most offer 1 free repair on the pipwork anyway so insurance may be a waste of time.0 -
Mine is inside the property, at the first point the mains pipe comes up through the floor. Five years ago when I enquired about it, they said it would be outside, and a lot of hassle to install, and might not even be possible. Then, when I enquired again a couple of years ago, they said "oh, it's easy, it just goes in your cupboard and takes 20 minutes to put in". Something must have changed for the better (and more sensible) recently!I suppose it's like the electricity or gas meter i.e. you don't tamper with it unless you want to face prosecution.
The chap who put my meter in said you can install it the other way round, and it goes backwards, and that "a mate of his who is also a plumber" (yeah...) does this for a couple of months per year!0 -
Quick google search reveals that tampering with a water meter is a criminal offence:
