Just a little more space - short term lets of unusual property

Some extra space would be useful, but it's a load of hassle to move, expensive and we might need to move again soon making it difficult to commit to anywhere. Also in general I prefer to keep within my means with something I can always turn in at a later date.
Some things that would be nice to be able to rent:
- a garden or allotment
- storage space
- a workshop
- a garage
- a very short term rent shop
- a big kitchen, possibly with somewhere to serve friends
The traditional thing for the Englishman and his castle to do of course is to get mortgaged up and get the biggest thing he can. I don't want that. I just need some extra space from time to time.
In searching for I've found:
1) A cheap option is buying a garage. If you rent it's much more expensive and generally people don't want to know for short term stuff unless they're relatives. It is of course, hassle to sell again so your money is tied up.
2) Short term workshop rentals ARE sometimes possible but they are few and far between. They tend to be in the north or in cities - nothing in leafy suburbs where the typical nimby dwells.
3) Allotments are very rare to find but a good outlet.
4) Beach huts; crazy expensive including rental. No clue why? Why don't people rent them out in the winter for peanuts I don't know. Too much stress I suppose.
5) I don't know anywhere where you can make use of a big kitchen for an afternoon. Sounds like a business opportunity to me. It would be great to pay £50 for an afternoon hosting some friends, completely different to eating out. It would be even better if that was possible to use regularly on a rotor each month.
6) Buying agricultural land is a pain too. Well, more than I expected. You're mixed in with loads of speculators a lot of the time. Probably different in the north.
7) How's about siting a shipping container somewhere to work out of? Again, fraught with planning hassles.
A lot of these things probably very possible with friends and contacts but that's something I don't have local to me. Are there any businesses or websites to help find these property resources I'm not aware of?
Finally, is there anywhere in the world you've seen where the situation is different?

Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker
