There has been virtually no damage to the house I'm renting, but in the bathrooms the paint is flaking off the walls and has become very noticeable, despite having the window open and the extractor fan running every time I'm in there. Now I understand this can be down to the wrong kind of paint being used, e.g the kind that will flake off in the presence of moisture.
Also, there are some areas that use the lino type flooring, which have weird stains on them. Looking into it, they seem to be underneath the flooring, which would suggest to me some underlying damp problem.
I would just like to know if it's likely I'm going to be held liable for these costs, given that they are most likely through no fault of my own?

The first thing you should do is report the flaking paint IN WRITING to the landlord and voice the concern that although you have taken all reasonable steps to prevent any condensation-damage to the bathroom, the paint is starting to peel off.
This is not the sort of issue that should be left until you vacate and for the landlord to discover without warning0 -
Ok thanks, I shall do that. It's done by an Agency so I guess I should send them the letter
Should it come to the worst and I get blamed, can it be proven that it's through no fault of my own?0 -
They can try to blame you but if you are taking all of the sensible precautions you can, have informed them of your concerns as soon as you noticed it then how would it be your fault?0
