i would like to use it here.

i can use the phone but not to make phone calls (i.e. i can play games read text messages).

American GSM phones use different frequency bands, 850 and 1900, rather than our 900 and 1800. If you had a tri- or quad-band phone you'd have coverage, but a more basic phone such as this will be dual-band only. Sorry to disappoint you.0

you could also try using O2, Voda, or T moblie as they may work on the other frequencies as suggested above.0

as andy88 says
the 1100 in usa was released on gsm 850 / 1900mhz
see here:

but in uk it needs 900 / 1800 mhz

are you saying that the phone cant work here anyway?0 -
I've always had a suspision that it is just the firmware which is different. If it is the some with the correct cables and software could change it for you.
Maybe there is an expert out there who can shed some light on it.0 -
i dont think it will work if it is a usa model
im not sure if a reflash would do it, it may be a different signal chip
try asking nokia repair center if they could do s/w upgrade - should be free0 -
No the aerial & enhancer will be tuned to the 1900 frequencies. But as you can (could?) pick one of these phones up for £19.99, that's probably the best idea.0
