hi i have set up a dd with powergen for my gas and electric they want £125 a month, great i thought.. dd is going out on 21st of each month starting in april but they then said your new bill is due on april 5th you will need to pay this in full before the direct debit starts otherwise we may have to increase the direct debits to cover the april bill as my account would in affect be in arrears...
can they do this ??
what is the point of this direct debit if i still have to pay my next bill in full...
advice much appreciated....

Presumably they calculate(estimate) that your annual consumption will be £1,500 for the year ahead(12 x £125).

If that is the case you clearly have to start the year with a 'clean slate'(i.e. bill paid).

Or you have the option of adding what you owe(i.e. the outstanding April 5th bill) onto next years estimated bill - which will obviously increase your monthly DD.

I am not clear what you expect Powergen to do in this case? If you don't pay off the April 5th bill you will end up still owing them the same amount next year - assuming the £1,500 estimate is accurate.

They can do what they like as long as they notify you first, if you don't agree with it then your alternative is to cancel the direct debit and lose the dd discount. ;)
