Hello Swiss_Toni
I'll move your thread to the 'Greenfingered' board, where it should get more responses.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

where do you live,
I have about 30 young conifers that need a new home, free of charge, just don't want to dig them up and put them on the bonfire, as I feel as though I am killing them, but I don't want them anymore, so need to find a new home for them, I am in north yorkshire,

I don't realy understand why it is not a compulsory part of member registration that their general location is not required for inclusion when posting as knowing this fact could bring more helpful replies and cut out some unnecessary ones.
Edit : perhaps this reply should be in the site feedback section .

We collected some privet sprigs to feed stick insects about 15 years ago, planted some and are now the proud owners of a “hedge” that is almost two feet long.
Go get some cuttings, plant them and your grandchildren can trim it for you (unless global warming causes a plague of wild stick insects)0 -
I too rooted cuttings when feeding stick insects.
I pushed the cuttings in Oasis foam and kept it moist. After to weeks there were roots. The cuttings were semi hard and had the 'heel' at the bottom.
However, being the owner of approx 400' of privet I would not plant any more. It is vigorous so it takes water and nourishmaent from the nearby soil and needs cutting too often.
I replaced a 20' section with beech, planting 18" whips. After 3 years I had a 4' hedge which only requires light cutting compared to privet and had interst throughout the year. Along a field edge I planted hawthorn and this have made a thick burglar proof hedge which I only cut once a year.
hthDoing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -
Hi
Buying from a nursery/Garden Centre looks a bit expensive - particularly for mature plants - any other suggestions?
(I stopped at a site with a sign outside saying a developer had bought the land to build new houses - it had a privet growing down the middle and I thought "WoooHooo" but it turned out the hedge had to stay and they were building the houses either side - DOH!)
