Pc World Laptop

I purchased an Advent Laptop from PC World about 19 months ago, I didnt extend the warrenty for various reasons, sales of good act, i can repair it myself cheaper etc. Now the hinges have seized and and the casing is slightly broken, and its a nightmare to close. My local repair shop said that its a common problem and they cant get a new case for it.
So today i phoned up pcworld and asked them if i could purchase a replacement case for the laptop and they said no but they will fix it for me, i said ok then how much will that cost me, they said it will cost £50 to diagnose the problem and then they will quote me a price to fix it. i said but i know what the problem is, the hinges have seized, the case is subsequently damaged and i need a new case, diagnoses over, no need for the £50, can you quote me for a repair or preferably sell me the part i need. No they insist they cannot do that.
No whats the best route to go down to get this problem solved, before going through trading standards?
When i refused warranty it didnt occur to me that you could not buy replacement parts, ive never had a problem getting replacement parts for something in the past.
Thanks

Your ability to buy replacement parts is not a consumer issue.
Also the fifty pounds is labor, diagnostics, courier, insurance etc. Until it's physically at the repair shop and diagnosed by a engineer can they tell you what exactly it needs.
Giving a quote over the phone is wrong, would you ask a brickie to give a phone quote to re brick your driveway?
You can either call them again and ask to follow the SoGA route, where they'll take the same fifty pounds off you and will determine if it is a inherent manufacturing fault, if it is they'll repair it and refund the money taken. If it isn't they'll give you a phone with the cost of parts.
You can also take it to a independent repair shop and get a report done, if it agrees that it is a inherent fault you can send it to Dixons Retail with a copy of the receipt and they will decide to either repair or offer a partial refund, this method of course takes longer.0 -
No i wouldnt expect a bricky to be able quote my driveway on the phone, but with measurements he would have a fair idea. It needs the case replacing, its not rocket science to know how much that may cost, same way if i asked them how much it would cost to install a stick of RAM they would know.
In anycase when you say an independant repair shop, does that mean any repair shop or do they have to have some credentials?0 -

How do you expect them to know if there is any internal damage / that needs fixing without inspecting it?
Suppose they quote based on your description and then find further work is necessary because your description is poor?
.....and many other reasons why an inspection is important first.
As for an independent report, you would need to show the report was produced by a competent, qualified engineer of good repute.0 -
I'd speak to PC World head office first and tell them that it's out of guarantee and you want to go down the SOGA route.
Has it's a common problem they may not want to bother with the independant report because they know they will have to pay for it.
See what they have to say first.0
