Tax credit overpayments

Hi. I'm not sure where best to turn so thought I'd post here. I moved in with my gf two years ago and she had been receiving tax credits for her 14 year old son for many years. We informed hmrc we were now living together.

They've written to us months ago now at start of year saying we owed three amounts for overpayment of tax credits, one of which covers the year I moved in, so feasibly this one is explained.

i've written to hmrc several times asking for reasons why we were overpaid as all they have said are some standard reasons people get overpaid (not informing them of a change in circumstances for example) but none apply to us as far as we know.

The last letter I wrote I said they are not giving any reasons in black and white why we owe them over £3k so without good reason dont see why we should pay them the money. They reply simply stating 'we will only look at previous decisions if you supply new information for us to reconsider the recovery of the overpayment, but you have not provided anything new' (or words to that effect).

We're at our wits end because surely they should tell us at what point and why we have been overpaid. Any advice what we should do?

We know full well the mistakes and clerical errors they've made in the past so really are not willing to blindly pay out. We've phoned them several times too and they can supply no new information, even stating they themselves dont understand what has happened, or what the amounts apparently overpaid were caused by.

so whats are best course of action? I've written three times now and get the same reply back after some lengthy delay saying basically 'you owe us money, youre not providing us info saying why you dont owe us money, so you still owe us money'.

Without knowing why they think we owe money what info can we provide them to say why we dont?!

Any help gratefully received.
