Visa Debit Cards and security (sort of OT)

Just tried to add £10 to a Coral a/c via Visa Debit - and as you go through you get to the Verified by Visa page.
On Friday you could skip past this without using it - now you have to, no choice in it.
Personally I will not use V by V nor SecureCode by Mastercard - it puts the burden of proof on you that the transactions that have emptied your account are fraudulent, as they are based on your pin number authorising the transaction - which only you know!
Therefore if there are any fraudulent transactions on your account, then it's your fault as someone must know your pin ,ergo you are in breach of the t&c as you have not taken reasonable care to protect your pin and are not protected!!
Just spoken to my bank and they confirmed that it is now a compulsory validation for those merchants who have signed up to the scheme. They also confirmed they understood why I didn't want it but their response was - tough, it's a done deal.
As yet there are no 3-d secure schemes for Maestro/Switch, so most of my MBing needs are fine, but I was just about to start MBing with my Visa Debit and ran into this.
Frankly I'm seriously !!!!!! off about this, another reason to get as much unlawful charges back as possible, on the off-chance you get hit with fraud and you're signed up to the above code, you'll lose big time.

To me, the move from 'verifiable handwritten signature' to 'four numbers only' was a huge step back in POS security as anyone can shoulder surf a sloppy PIN entry but mimicking a signature (to an attentive/interested shopkeeper of course) is more difficult, why didn't they make it both for crissake.
With online verification at least the Barclaycard verification thing can be a mixed alphanumeric/caps/etc normal password, but unless you want requisite digital fingerprint scanners for online shopping it's better than just card#/expiry/CVC2 code ...Used my MB profits to trade London for Cyprus ...0 -

When I've used it for my Visa Debit card they ask for my CVV number, Pin AND a password which I've set.
Seems safer, as someone who finds your card can easily use it onlineNo longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -
I wasn't blaming Corals, I know it's the bank, and I've skipped past it elsewhere.
I know - to$$ers!!
I have more faith in me managing my security than I do them, and I cannot see why I should give them even more ammunition to fleece me than they already have!
I agree chachi, but you just watch what happens. As 3d secure systems become more common, you will read of people being denied protection as they cannot prove that they weren't responsible for the fraudulent transactions.
Money under the mattress, far safer!!!

Ah ... this is a case where having had a fixed IP at home for a number of years could work to my advantage then.
I only bet with bookies / shop online from the net at home, so could argue any different IP being fraudulent as the accounts would always have shown access from just the one
I do use BF from my vario II, but that's proper SSL/Opera browsing via HSDPA so am not overly concerned as I doubt many can scan/capture/decode those packets as of yet.Used my MB profits to trade London for Cyprus ...0 -

I haved develop web-based applications which use 3D secure, and over the coming months you will be forced to use this. If you dont wish to use them, you can kiss goodbye to using your cards online as all 3D secure transactions will fail. Those without passwords and pins, will be prompted to enter one when using your card online.0

What is 3D secure? Is it the Mastercard version of the Verified by Visa scheme?0
-
3D Secure is the term given to both schemes run by MasterCard and Visa0
