I had no problem using a debit card. I have had that before though with another retailer (Tesco mobile top up) and it turned out they had flagged up my card for possible fraudulent activity (wrongly) and so the bank stopped it when I repeatedly tried to top up online. phone your bank and find out what the deal is.0
