Cornwall: Man On the Radio in a Tent

Obviously you only hear half a story - and the bit they want you to hear, but this guy phoned into Radio Cornwall at 14:55 today. I've written it in the order in which his situation was aired/uncovered:

His marriage broke up and he couldn't find anywhere to live, so his mate said he could put a tent in his back garden. He's got an extension lead out there for power and uses the loo etc in the house.

He's now been in the tent for 3.5 years. His son lives with him in the tent. But - it's an 8-man tent and his son is 30. He's 54.

He also said they have dogs (this is probably the root of his problem).

He's been on the housing list all this time - and it's a bidding system. He is classified as "Category C", in a system where an "A" is urgent/immediate need. He said the last one he bid on, 45 people also bid on - and he didn't get it.

Now - it leaves a lot of unanswered questions really ... like whether he's trying to get a house in one particular street/town, or why in 3.5 years he's not managed to find somewhere to rent and save a deposit.

No idea if he/they are working at all.

However - two grown men don't live in a tent in a garden for 3.5 years just for the LULZ.

If they aren't working surely they can both claim job seekers and housing allowance? Surely that is enough to cover the cost of renting privately if they chose to do so.

If they're working then they may still be able to claim housing allowance, and could rent.

It sounds a lot to me like the bloke wants a council house and either hasn't considered other options or is aware but holding out anyway.
Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...

He didn't sound dense.... I was annoyed that the presenter didn't have enough about him to ask relevant questions... but he's challenged.
