Paypal will no longer let me pay with Credit card

I have just purchased an item on eBay, using Buy it Now, went to pay via Paypal and it is now asking for my bank account details!
The message said something about exceeding my transaction limit, but the whole transaction is less than £10 in value.
I have my credit card registered on Paypal and my address is verified, so I am a bit miffed that Paypal is now also asking for my bank account details too!
I really feel like abandoning Paypal and go back to writing cheques, I just don't feel comfortable that Paypal seem to want to know more and more about me....
BTW, I have been using Paypal for over four years, so it is not as if I am a new customer.
Anyone else had this? Is there anyway round it? All I want to do is pay for the item, without having to give Paypal any more info about me than they legitimately need.

Have you ever given them your bank details? If not then this is what they want. If you do give them your details, they will change the default funding method to your bank, and you will have to remember to change the funding option to credit card when paying for something. This is a pain, but there is not much you can do about it. They want you to fund payments by Bank account as they can take the funds by Direct Debit which is cheaper for them and there is less chance of chargebacks being done from bank accounts than there is from credit card.0

Thanks for your prompt reply to my question.
No, I haven't ever given Paypal my bank details, I have always used my credit card instead.

You must have reached the "limit" they set (which I think is total £500) and then they ask you to register your bank details.
However, once you've done this your limits are removed, and you can still pay by CC (you just have to tick the correct box when making payment)It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.
Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.0 -
This transaction might be below £10, but has your annual or monthly total been quite high? If it has then this is the limit you have exceeded and they will ask for bank details to verify you are genuine.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Methinks paypal are having problems - i posted the comments below on another thread this morning about similar issues...
"I have also just strted having paypal problems.
The money goes in ok - but since monday i can't spend it...
When i complete ebay checkout, then sign in to paypal, the message is "can't use your card" ( I have sufficient in paypal - and there is enough in the current account) then when i try to manually send through paypal, I am informed that I have not enrolled on the extended use program (why should I have to, but i have anyway).
GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I have previously used paypal for 3 years with no problems - and now i can't use the money i have accrued.

Not being able to get it out is much worse than not being able to pay! Hope that you get it resolved soon orlwaysbroke.
No, I haven't spent much on eBay this month, no more than £20 and my annual spend is not high either....0 -
Paypal is now all about cutting fraud etc... so that could be part of the problem. Registering your details might be the only option of using again. Not what you wanted to hear but...Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

there were some Paypal changes made on 8th March, looks like many people are having problems. There is an Ebay thread here with someone from paypal offering advice...

So basically Paypal are aware of these issues - and then choose to
1) Apparently do nothing, and
2) Do nothing to notify sellers of the problems this has all caused.
I SO WISH THERE WAS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE
