Possible overpayment?

Today £900 has gone into my bank from tax credits. I did send in my renewal last week and expected a change due to being on maternity leave for some of last year. However, I did not expect this kind of payment. I rang them and they said they have no record of such a payment and I should double check my bank. My questions are can they just take this money back? Should I wait for my renewal form? How likely is it they will trace this even though confirming on the phone no such payment has been made?
How can they just give someone nearly a thousand pound and not trace it. Arrgghh!!!

The safest course of action is to find an interest bearing account, and put it in that, and leave it until it's cleared up one way or the other.

If the money is already in your account then no they cannot take it back. I'd phone back, it may be that the advisor only checked your payment schedule for 12-13 but the money might be from the previous tax year. Once the renewal is processed you would receive an award letter confirming your 11-12 award anyway however award letters can take a while.0

Is it definitely from the Tax Credit Office? If it is it should be viewable to the advisor in either the current or previous year account screen depending if after doing the renewal they worked out they owed you some money. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
