My housekeeper is fine, its the downstairs maid who is the problem, she pays gentlemen callers "in kind", it does save a bit of money but the noise is just so dreadful it disturbs my afternoon bridge rubber.

Tod sit down with the housekeeper and have a chat over a cuppa. Admit that you have a few annoying habits and suggest that if you agree to stop one of yours she could stop humming. Expect her to give you a long list to choose from, and maybe a slap round the chops for not instantly getting that you dont think she smells ;)

A small price to pay for being able to live in peace though isn't it.

will have to give it a go, but its fish pie on Wednesday (when she is back) and I don't want to mess that up (she does the best fish pie ever)

My wife says I should grin and bear it, and just think of Normans chicken and leek bake up the pub , which would be the alternative and is not a patch on fish pie

In the unlikely event that you do end up cheesing her off, M&S do a lovely fish pie that you just stick in the oven for half hour. Not overly expensive so still very MSE.

Maybe get one in just in case you blow it.

Can't you ask the butler to have a quiet word with her?

The truly inept can microwave the fish pie. I take it you know how to open and close a door and turn a knob ;)

You want to get rid of this one, too. Everyone knows fish should be served on Fridays, although us plebs have to make do with a chippy tea!
