We signed up with ntl a few years back for cable television, telephone and a cable modem for broadband access. Our monthly bill covers all three. It is very difficult to make comparisons with other companies for - say - phone bill.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has managed to compare the ntl deal with other companies?
  • ShareClubSec,
as you have phone, TV and broadband with NTL, you should not be charged for your phone line rental. Use the NTL 3-2-1 tariff and register with https://www.call1899.co.uk You will then be charged 3p per call to geographic UK numbers. This will save you over £10/month (at least) against NTL's Unlimited 24 tariff. Next tap NTL up for a reduction in the price of your broadband telling them that you can get the same or better cheaper elswhere. They should be forthcoming as you've been with them a while.

Ive had NTL phone, TV and Dial Up before they switched from Cable and Wireless. Having spent today on Uswitch.com Ive found that One Tel will provide me with the cheapest calls based on my usage (although I will look at 1899 having read this site), somebody mentioned on here that you can only get One Tel with a BT line which I don't think is the case.

As I don't have a BT line NTL Broadband is the best option for Internet, although I was wondering whether it was worth switching back to BT (I had a free connection letter somewhere) and then getting Tiscalli Broadband, I should then be able to get better offers on phone deals with the BT line.

I was then going to scrap the NTL digital and get Sky Digital as its the same price, better interactive features, and more channels with the family pack.

Its just too much to consider, is was so much easier in the early days, anyway any thoughts are welcomed before I do some more research and hopefully take the plunge on Wednesday.

Then its time to look at the Gas Bills.........

First of all Spooky, I would phone NTL and discuss leaving them and see what they will offer to keep you. If its not a great deal well you can do as you suggest and go back to BT, sign up for Onetel and 18866 for your calls and give Sky some consideration.

As regards internet, you will have a much greater choice with a BT line :D

To confirm - I assume you need broadband for the calls to work??

If not - can you use skype to phone the nocharge dialup numbers?? - guess not at its basically phoning the U.S, assume nocharge doesn't have skype(in) number.

Just checking and hoping and praying!

  • Spooky,
I'm paying NTL £17.99/month for my broadband. I saw an advert on https://www.supanet.com and for the same price I can have 2meg broadband with a 3gb limit. I'll be ringing NTL tomorrow to put the squeeze on them to reduce my broadband price. You can but try.

Fresh off the phone from NTL. My 1mb broadband payment is reduced to £10.50/month. NTL customer services couldn't help me so I called their customer retentions department on 0800 052 0243. This market must be getting very competitive :D

Onetel line rental has been discussed here.
  • I would like to thanks to Mr. Martin for his wonderful advice and money saving tips. I am a regular visitor of moneysavingexpert and very much pleased by his services. Thanks agains Martin.

Regarding the cheap international call articles, 1899 is great and saving a lot of money. But they are quiet often changing their deals. When I have joined 1899 couple of weeks ago following Maritin's advice there was only 5 pence per minute to make a call to India. At least 100 people joined with 1899 with my recomendation soon after it and all of us spent at least 50 pound a month. I have been making 100 pounds worth of call every month. Suddenly they changed it to 6 pence per minute and now it is 7 pence per minute.
It means it is not the cheapest option now to make a call to India.
But still 1899 is the most convenient method of make a call.
You can find so many calling cards cheaper than these.

Accordign to Martin's International call checker, cheapest way of making a land line call to India is through Penny phone. In reality you never been connected in time, but it is begining to charge you immediately after dialign the access number. Most of the time after a long wait it says, the number you are trying is not been answering.
There is a problem with mobile access number too. It was a 4 pence number. But in reality when you call it will advice you to call another expensive number.

When we are including the VAT too, it is always better to use callign cards. Can you advice us to
use the cheapest calling cards please Martin?

It seems then that 1899, although 2p a minute dearer, would be the better option for convenience and actually getting your call through to the number you require.

Plus the call charges shown with 1899 include the VAT element.
