Car bought - broke 2 days later..

Hey,
Right, so i purchased a Landrover Discovery from a car dealership in Bristol. It wasnt cheap for me, but fairly cheap for what it is.
I enquired about warantee (after hearing the dealer speaking to another person saying the car they were looking at had 3 months) and was told that due to the age of my car, it wouldnt be covered, however 'Anything major would be cared for'

Basically, after 2 days, i drove through Bristol, came to a traffic light.. and didnt stop. Literally, no brakes, nothing at all.
I pulled up in a lay by using the handbrake.

I called the dealership and said what had happened.
The sales guy said he would call his boss.
I then went to work, and picked up a message on my phone later saying that 'it wasnt engine or gearbox' so not covered.

At that point i thought ok, just fix it and carry on - however, having just been handed a bill for £900+ - and its not finished yet, i feel thats very steep, considering ive driven the car for 2 days.

A few people ive spoken to have said that surely the car wasnt safe when sold?
Id really like some advice on how to proceed please.

Many thanks!

So what is actually wrong with it?

    What's its age and mileage?

Who has given you a bill ?
Another garage you took the car to ? if so you have scuppered your rights as you did not give the dealer an opportunity to redeem the situation unless you have something in writing about the Engine and Box.
You should have served a notice upon him of the defect by letter or by hand before getting the work done elsewhere.

    'Ive scuppered my rights'??

What else could i do? I need the car on the road so therefore needed to get it fixed.

I have the voicemail saved on my phone about the box / engine.

Whats actually wrong with it, is that lots of the hoses have leaked / perished, its has an ABS problem, as well as a leak on the LPG.
The dealer also sold it to me without its LPG certificate, so i have to fork out to get it re checked and a new certificate issued.

    Its a P reg, on 130k.
It was sold with 1 years MOT and has 3 months tax left.

ETS - I dont have the bill yet as such. The car is awaiting a new part. I called the garage to ask how much / how long yesterday and was told the £900 figure.

If you've got proof the dealer refused to act, then you may still have a case, but it wasn't the right thing to rush off to another garage (without even getting alternative quotes?) within two days of the problem occurring to spend £900. Having the car repaired out of your own pocket is an act of accepting ownership for one thing so you can no longer reject the car, and asking for the £900 repair bill would probably be seen as unreasonable unless you've got firm proof the garage refused under any circumstances to inspect and/or fix the car themselves. As to whether a saved voicemail is enough, I really don't know. At best, I think you can hope for a contribution towards the bill.

Save the hoses and contact VOSA about the MOT, you could ask the garage to mot inspect it prior to the repair then re-mot it with the parts fixed.
It may prove the MOT was not correctly issued.

However to be honest you have jumped the gun, you should have sought advice first as soon as the car became faulty, you could have got all your money back

Like i said - when the garage said they wouldnt fix it what was i supposed to do?

I will call the garage and get them to save the parts off it - its gone to the only garage i trust - and a specialist in 4x4, LPG cars.

Ive just called them, asked for all the parts to be kept.
He did say that he would never have sold a car in that condition (They sell all types of Landys / Shoguns etc)
He also said that some of the work they have done, in his eyes, the MOT is suspect.

He also said the same as i thought - i need it fixed, they are the closest garage to me and specialise in my vehicle type.

You were supposed to reject the car for a full refund at that point.
We could've helped you with that. Too late now though. :(

Ok, point taken, i could have somehow got the car back to them.

However i really like the car (Apart from its lack of stopping!)
I never envisaged the car costing 3/4 of the sum paid in repairs.
I went to a dealership, over private sales, to give me more security :-(

So why did you you not buy a vehicle from them, or at least ask them to find you one in good condition?

Nothing in my price range - nothing older than a 54 plate on their forecourt.

Not really sure how your comment helps my situation really?
I came on for advice on what to do NOW.
Not what i should / could have done before.
