Boiler Replacement

Hi All,

Whilst still running my Potterton boiler is now 30 years old and obsolete so it's time to replace it.

I have had three quotes all for different boilers and all contradicting each other so first can anyone answer these questions :-

1/ Do Worcester-Bosch boilers (24Ri or 30CDi) require a pump overrun cable to be fitted otherwise the guarantee is invalidated ?

2/ Do all new boilers require a powerflush otherwise the guarantee is invalidated ?

The quotes are for new boiler/larger tank/values etc and remove of one radiator capped below floor and capping of old gas heater pipe below the floor (both of these are in wood topped gullies in a concrete floor so fairly easy.

I got a quote from a recommended local supplier (£3500) for the WB 24Ri but he never mentioned the above however the British Gas advisor did and recommended a Potterton Precision as it did not require the pump overrun cable and came up with a quote of £4400. This reduces by £400 for the scrappage scheme and he mentioned a leeway of some £200 he had which reduced it to around £3800 which wasn't split item by item but into 5 sections :-
Boiler £787.20
Standard Boiler Replacement £1,668.92
Customisation & Compliance £272.90
System Reliability £354.59
System Performance £1,379.74
Total (inc VAT) £4,463.35

This sounds high to me but I would like to know if he was stringing me along or telling the truth about the above questions.

I notice a lot of replies revolve around you could get that £1500 cheaper using a local supplier but how to I find a reliable one that I can trust

is there a registry or web search anywhere ?

or better still does anyone know one around the Hertford area ?

Many thanks,

Chris

    Hi All,

Whilst still running my Potterton boiler is now 30 years old...

1/ Do Worcester-Bosch boilers (24Ri or 30CDi) require a pump overrun cable to be fitted...

I'm guessing your existing pump is external to the boiler. It's likely (haven't checked) the replacement boilers have a pump inside the boiler casing.

In that case the requirement is for an unswitched live supply to the boiler and possibly an automatic bypass (but that is not what was said). Methinks the British Gas man is trying to baffle you. I do not know whether he is being "honest" that a Potterton Precision doesn't require an unswitched live supply (and has a built-in automatic bypass).

Edit: the 24Ri requires an external pump which requires to be wired back to the boiler.
Edit: the 30CDi has an internal pump (but needs an external automatic bypass or equivalent unrestricted flow path).
