We have received some very useful replies thank you, and rather disappointingly, some which are beginning to turn it into a soapbox for personal views and self gratification. Just in case its not absolutely clear - My Wife and I have always paid our dues willingly and on time, and we have no intention of avoiding our social responsibilities now or in the future.
Now, to get this back on topic once more,
It is not clear to me whether the "Family Protection Trust" question has been addressed and I would really appreciate some factual assistance in that.

Well I think if you read the replies properly that no-one has turned the thread into a soapbox for self gratification.

What they have said is that if it came to a choice of their parents being comfortable in a decent care home or being miserable living in a flea pit then seeing their parents happy and well looked after wins very time......and unfortunately that costs money.

My nan always saved for a rainy day but regretably no amount of persuading could make her put the umbrella up when she needed to.

That's funny, because I also googled it and got lots of hits. Including a couple of threads specifically about them on this very forum, and a link to a BBC Panorama programme all setting out potential pitfalls such as discussed on this thread, and also a suggestion that they would deplete the value of the estate because not tax efficient and have management fees. But I have no first hand knowledge of these kinds of trusts, so OP needs to do their own research, but a search on google and MSE would be a reasonable start.

Ooops. I think it was my computer playing up.

OP, you don't say how old you are but you do say that you are both 'fit and well'. You are worrying about something that may never happen.

I know of what I speak. Almost 10 years ago my younger daughter was here, and as we walked down the garden together to look at the plants, I said 'This will all be yours one day'. She squeezed my arm and said 'I hope not for a very long time'. When she got back into the car to drive away, that was the last time I saw her alive. 6 weeks later she was dead. She was 39.

More recently, 10 days ago DH underwent spinal surgery. There were 2 'nightmare scenarios' (a) that I'd be widowed for a second time and (b) that he'd survive but come home in a wheelchair. Thankfully, neither happened and we have been given our lives and our future back. That future may not be long, but it's ours and we are not about to spoil it by worrying about what may/may not happen to a pile of bricks-and-mortar. Incidentally, I've been saving, but because of the euro crisis hitting the stock markets, my savings are going down too! Ooooops!!
