Big Water Leak

On 19th June 2006 I had a water meter installed as I thought it would give me an opportunity to reduce my bills and my water usage.

In early September BT discovered a leak a few houses down from mine and called the water company. The water company traced it to my supply pipe my garden and read the meter on 5th September 2006.

They told me that it was my responsibility to get it fixed and gave me the contact details of some companies that could fix it.

I got a couple of quotes. One was about £500 and one about £600. At the time I couldn't afford it and Christmas was getting closer.

In November the Water Company sent me a bill for 1391 cubic meters of water at a cost of £1820.

We told them that we couldn't get it fixed straight away and they kept coming back to check the status of the leak.

After Christmas we still couldn't afford to get it fixed so we contacted them and said we definitely couldn't afford to get it fixed soon and could they help out in any way. To my surprise they said they would get one of their contractor out the next day to assess and then fix the leak. Sure enough the repair guys came out and assessed the leak and the following day they came back and fixed the leak.

Shortly afterwards I thought I'd look on their website to see what credits they could apply to our account regarding the high water use. I noticed that they offer a repair service to the supply pipe FREE to all customers. Why didn't they once offer it to me in all that time.

They've allowed me to waste millions of litres of water when it could have been avoided. I'm still waiting to see if they credit me all of the wasted water use above what we might normally use.

Has any one else had experiences like this? Anyone else been credited for thousands of pounds on their bill?

  • I've just today received a water bill for £2400, but got home too late to call the customer service line.

3 valleys water told us of the leak, luckily we had supply pipe insurance taken out with 3 valleys to cover the repairs but it doesn't cover the water bill.

So, I would also love to know if anyone has been credited for the water.

You should be able to claim on a leakage allowance with the water co.
