Paint Spill!

Hi Everyone.
I was in Tesco over the weekend and I picked up a tub of fence paint (Cuprinol). A few minutes later, while still in store, the handle snapped and tin split open.
My shoes were covered in paint and some on to my jeans.
The manager told me to go to Timpsons to see if it could be cleaned and to get a quote (they said Nubuck couldnt be cleaned) . I am going back to see the Manager today to see what he will say.
The main issue is that these were a £300 pair of shoes, a one off treat as ive never really got expensive shoes.
Where do I stand with this situation ? Is there any legal wording that would be worth knowing about?
Is the the retailer or the manufactuer that I should deal with.
Thanks!

But I do have to ask, wearing £300 shoes to buy paint from Tesco?! Really?!<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
To start negotiations, make sure you have proof of the value of the shoes. Eyebrows are going to be raised if you ask for £300 for the shoes without any evidence to support it.
Also, unless the shoes are reasonably new, you won't get the value of a brand new pair.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0 -
Pretty much everything has been said that can be said on claiming back from tescos.
But I have to ask, why didn't you apply some protector to the £300 shoes?
It's the first thing I do when I get a pair of fancy shoes. Prevention is the best form of defence.0 -
It could be worth having a peep at your insurance documents if you have accidental damage cover - just in case you get nowhere with Tesco, not that it will be a great deal of help in all probability0

The thread you quote justifies the store offering recompense reduced for the age and wear of the damaged article
As for wearing £300 shoes to Tesco's, well no big deal. It is reasonable to expect to come back with undamaged shoesHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I went bowling once with the OH. When we came to retrieve our shoes, his had disappeared. Instead they handed him an (admittedly) similar pair.
Initially he seemed reluctant to accept someone else's shoes until I pointed out that they were virtually brand-new Pradas and his were a tatty 5 year old pair from Burtons.
You could ask why wear brand-new Pradas to the bowling alley? I still feel a little sorry for the poor sod that did though. Mind you, he's stupid enough to walk home in a pair of knackered ones from Burtons so perhaps he deserved it
This has nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's plight, so feel free to ignore."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I always stick some protector spray on my new shoes, but this is normally only for water, grease or dirt protection.
I doubt vey much if any of the generally available shoe protection products would do much against a deluge of fence paint which probably contains all sorts of solvents and other weird chemicals.0 -

Maybe he been out for an evening on the beer and stopped off at the bowling alley on their way home.
He probably didn't notice anything until the next morning.0
