Advice needed re Musicals in London

I'm planning to buy tickets of musical for my hubby's birthday next month, being a musical virgin, I have no idea which musical I should go for and which one he may like....I myself would probably enjoy something like Chicago or Dirty Dancing which is quite girly, but people have told me that Guys and Dolls and some other ones are great too, just wondering if anyone can recommend a musical which both of us can enjoy?
Also, there seems to be so many different kind of seats to choose from........is the most expensive one the best? Or which one should I go for? Dress Circle?
If anyone can recommend any links to get cheap tickets that would be even better.
Any advice is appreciated.

hi christal
the london musicals vary greatly from child to elderly, families tend to go for mary poppins, lion king, chitty chitty bang bang all fantastic shows, i found chicago to be highly acclaimed but a disappointment, more because the hype of costumes songs ect, the performance lacked colour as did the costumes all black/grey/white not the spectacular i was expecting, the wonderful les miserables takes some getting into but is worth every minute - my top choice over the last while has been mary poppins and sound of music, they do deviate from the films and scores are re vamped, depending how diverse you want to be, maybe try the producers or classicly the tempest is equally good - i tend to order my tickets on line or direct at the discount booths and shops in leicester square.yes you can beat it :j - everyday is a bonus - use it well0 -
As a guy, I can say I luuuuurved Chicago. Women + skimpy clothes, your hubby well thank you for weeks!
Recently saw Sound of Music, Enjoyed more than I thought I would - i took the missus!
Spamalot is good fun, but 1st half much better than 2nd
Les Mis is always good, but a bit more hardcore maybe!
Enjoyed the Abba one too.
Lion king was a bit over produced for my liking, it was more about the production than conencting with actors etc...
Joseph is great - not on atm? Starlight Express I enjoyed as a kid - also not on?
I want to see Dirty Dnacing or maybe cabaret (for the same reason as Chicago )!Debt: a bloomin big mortgage
all posts are made for entertainment value only, nothing I say should be taken as making any sense and should really be ignored0 -

I saw Evita a few weeks ago and it was great.
I found Lion King too long, almost 3 hours.0 -
Thanks everyone who take time to reply, Chicago is now my first choice, just need to have some more chat with my hubby to find out which one he would prefer. Ticket wise it seems you can get pretty good deals from the ticket booth (about half price for almost everything which is available), so if I don't book anything on internet I will go for the booth straight away. Thanks again!0

Dress Circle seats are often stepped, so you can't stretch your legs under the seat in front of you. Stalls are often sloped so you can stretch your legs a bit.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

I would highly recommend Guys & Dolls. I went to see it this week and it was fantastic. Don Johnson is quite a talented man. Although he didn't wear his cream suit! I think it is his last week this week too. Dunno who's replacing him. Claire Sweeney was also very good as was Ben Richards. The musical won the 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. Well deserved too.
I took my OH with me - he was a musical virgin too. But he really enjoyed it (thank god!), as did my sister's OH.
I also agree with boobless on Chicago. It was good but I expected a bit more from it. It didn't live up to the hype in my opinion
I got my tickets from lastminute a few weeks back when they had 70% off tickets and there was no booking charge! We were up in the Grand Circle (not good if you're bit scared of heights) and the view and seats were OK.
But Guys & Dolls tickets are still on promotion on here but more like £27.50 per ticket now.0
