Personal Investment Plan payments & tax credits

I have some money invested in a personal investment plan which pays out quarterly. I also claim tax credits. Should the payments on the investment plan be declared as income when claiming tax credits?!
I did ask my financial adviser when I first took out the plan and he said there was no need to as the payments were tax free.
