Balance of hol to be taken automatically?

Hi there, I've just paid a small deposit for our September holiday, using my credit card. At the very END of the online booking process with JET2HOLIDAYS it says the balance of my holiday will AUTOMATICALLY be collected from my credit card on the due date, incurring a 2.5% charge (will cost me about £30). I want to pay the balance with a DEBIT card, though. I wouldn't dream of paying the balance with the credit card. HOW can they do this? I understood that companies are not ALLOWED to keep your card details - otherwise, what's to stop them taking more and more from your card? Has anyone else come across this - but got round it? Sue (Durham)

Have you tried calling them to ask? Perhaps if you talk to them, you might find out they will take your payment over the phone using your debit card and cancel the automatic collection.

I think that is a disgrace. I too would not want to pay for a holiday with a credit card. You should definitely call them. Its the same problem with car hire firms, they just keep on debiting your card ....

Yep, absolutely disgraceful that someone enters into a contract without reading what they are doing.

Perhaps its because you used your credit card to pay the deposit, they've got those details and theyre going to use them again? If you call them they may be able to change it, it's not their fault they're obviously doing it automatically to save money, had you used your debit card for the deposit no doubt they'd have used that for the next payment

    Happy moneysaving all.

I seem to recall that someone booked a holiday then mistakenly thought they had more time to pay the balance and lost the holiday because they hadn't paid in time.

Perhaps if the company had had that procedure they wouldn't have lost their holiday.

I wonder what happened in that case?

But reading the T&Cs now, after the event(!), may offer a 'get-out'. They say...
The balance of the price of your travel arrangements must be paid at least 10weeks before your departure date and will automatically be taken from the credit/debit card used to pay the deposit.
...so the OP was pre-warned, and said they were when they checked the "I have read and understood the T&Cs" box.

However, those same T&Cs (same paragraph even!) go on to say...
You can go to ‘Manage My Booking’ on our website to part-pay your balance.
So, OP, have you logged on and taken a look? It would seem that if you can pay the balance by debit card in this 'manage my booking' area before the date which is 10 weeks before departure then you'll avoid the charges.

Well, what does the terms and conditions say, to which you obviously agreed?

It may be that they don't consider the transaction complete until paid for in full, after which they'll delete your card details.

It may also state in the T&Cs that you may not change your card details without incurring an administration charge/etc.

They paid a charge and had it re-instated.

Really? Somebody better tell Amazon and the like...

In reality companies can keep your card details but have to ensure that the data is kept secure and access is controlled.
