Comet auction foul play?

I put in a bid on a washing machine.
for the last 10 min I watch the time tick down with me as the highest bidder.
At zero seconds the auction said "closed" and "you are the highest bidder", however, when I went to pay this had changed to me being outbid.

I refreshed the screen right to the final second and end and no one outbid me - what's going on?

Should I complain ?
I have googled this and several people have similar suspicions

Did you receive an email from Ebay stating you had won the item? In my experience, these are sent out immediately the auction has ended. If you look at the bidding history for the item when was the winning bid for the item made?

It did not meet it's reserve, just because your the highest bidder doesn't mean you won it. Reserves are perfectly legal and are used in all auction room's both online and real world.

    But is everything acceptable if:
    a) they don't tell you there's a reserve before you bid
    and
    b) they lie to you after the auction has closed, and claim you've been outbid when actually you didn't meet the reserve?

Well from my experience of Comet and their washing machines you have most probably saved yourself some money and time by not winning it!!!

My mum is perfectly happy with her washing machine she purchased from Comet. Service was second to known, ordered, delivered, old appliance taken away and new one fitted without issue.

Always makes me laugh when people think that every purchase from companies such as Comet must be bad.

Companies such as Comet, sell thousands and thousands of items every week. I bet it is only a tiny percentage of people that have cause to complain.

But you can say that of any company, it's how they deal with the issues that counts. We expect things to be delivered, taken away, etc, we don't expect massive buck passing as mrstaypuff had
