Free meals on flights over 5 hours?

I was told on my last flight to America a few years ago that you didn't have to pay for meals on flights over 5 hours because of the duration it was mandatory for the airlines to feed you, can anyone confirm if this is still true?
I booked my holiday with Broadway travel and they are very good value for money. I am flying with My travel and it is £1,500 cheaper for my family than Virgin.
I also learnt that I paid for a heated pool at my villa last time and it was already included in the cost by the owner so I reclaimed the money back.
