cancelling car insurance

i was quoted £1000 for my car insurance and agreed to go with the policy. I got a call today from the broker saying that the policy has been increased to £1522 and my direct debit will be increased to £152 pounds per month. As this is £522 more than i was quoted and more than what i signed the agreement for can i cancel my policy without having to pay a cancellation fee. Thank you for any advice.

  • I was quoted 1000 over 10 months for insurance my new car, which i accepted. I paid my deposit and set up the direct debit of 99. I had a call today to say that the policy was being increased today to 1522 and that my direct debit was being amended. i would like to cancel this policy as this is not what i agreed to. Can i cancel it and will I have to pay a cancellation fee. Thank you for any advice.
  • What was the reason given for the premium increase? and how long ago did you take the policy out.

If the increase was due to an error on the part of the insurance company or a broker that arranged the policy then you should be entitled to cancel it and receive a refund, although you may have to pay for the time that cover was in place.

However, if the change in premium was due to an error or omission on your part when you filled out the application form or provided details over the phone or internet, then the company is entitled to ask for the extra premium, and if you don't want to pay this they will cancel your policy.
If this was to happen then they can still charge you for the time that cover was in place, and also a reasonable admin fee to cover their costs.

One thing to bear in mind is that were this to happen, it could affect your insurance premiums with other motor insurance companies as a standard question asked when applying is something such as "have you ever had a policy cancelled or declined".
  • I paid 99 pounds as a deposit about three weeks ago and the next payment is due to come out on the 1st of may. I declared all my details over the phone. I informed them that i had 9 years protected claims policy and that around six years ago my car was badly vandalized and i made a claim at the time. They are saying that the increase is because i made this claim. This was all declared at the onset of the policy.

Have you shown them proof of your no claims? I have heard of increases due to failing to provide proof of years of no claims. Also who protected it the new insurance company?
  • I DID PROVIDE PROOF OF THE NO CLAIMS PROTECTION. THIS WAS PROVIDED BY MY PREVIOUS PROVIDER. i WAS CHANGING PROVIDERS AS I FELT MY RENEWAL QUOTE WAS TOO STEEP.

Surely they cannot just increase your policy cost?

Sounds to me as though they haven't received your proof of no claims. If your previous insurers were sending it, have you called them to make sure it was sent ?

How long ago did you agree to the policy?

What reason did they give for the increase?

When was the change to take place? Is this the start of another 12 month policy or is it an amendment during the term?

If its the start of a new policy then yes, just tell them before it starts and set up alternative insurance.

If its an amendment during the term ask them what changed. Is it possible they've found out about something which you hadn't told them before (like an accident or a ticket)?
