Bathroom refurbishment - is it worth it?

Hello everyone, we bought our house a few months ago but for various personal reasons are probably going to be looking at moving again in the next 12-18 months. The bathroom here has a 1970s pale blue bathroom suite. We are going to redo the floor tiles, repaint, put in new blind and retile ourselves etc, but I bought a cheap white (modern!) bathroom suite for less than £100 in an end of clearance sale. Had several quotes from plumbers and could get the bathroom suite replaced for around £500.

INitially I was all for getting this done, but now as money gets ever tighter and we're expecting our first baby as well my question is - is it worth paying out the £500 to change suites if we are looking to move so soon? Would a change of suite add significantly in anyway to the value of the property when we come to sell it, or are we better off putting aside the suite idea and simply sprucing up the rest of the bathroom? All advice gratefully received!

Do it yourself, you'll need to spend a little on tools and you will need to read up and do a bit of research but I think it is well worth it.

we have just done a whole bathroom refit for my friend who is in dire straights...plasterboarded the walls the lot..and hubby has never done it before..it is possible..especially if you go to B &Q there are lots of leaflets near tills that tell you how to plumb in bathroom etc.Just be aware that if you buy a suite from B&Q check its all there!! we had to go back 3 times as the basin and various pipes were missing!
She had a rather tatty deep pink suite, with a broken loo seat,so she had to replace it with white one!!..we basically put approx £1500 on the value of her house..total spend £500.
TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....
  • Where are you as you can get it done for about £250-£350 around essex

its not so much as adding value to the house, as to selling it to more potential buyers!

HI everyone - thanks for your responses. To be honest I'd never thought we culd do it ourselves - but it's certainly worth investigating! Off to B&Q tomorrow to look for the leaflets and then off to the library at the weekends to look at DIY books! :j

Library is a great idea. Bear in mind that alot of the B&Q leaflets talk about using things like pushfit plumbing which personally I have avoided because I am not totally confident that it will stay leak free.

I am currently refitting my bathroom and the majority of my fittings are soldered, I took some time out to practise and read up before hand and it has been going well.
