Change to Sky from BT for broadband and phone

Hi folks

I currently have a BT contract for unlimited broadband and calls which is due to end in the next few weeks.
Sky currently have an offer for an unlimited broadband and UK calls package, six months free broadband then a total of £27.25 per month thereafter, much cheaper than BT.

Unlimited broadband is important for our needs but so is a decent speed.
I currently have a good speedy BT line and we live a mile from the exchange which is Sky LLU'd.

My questions are, can I expect Sky broadband to be a similar speed to BT's and will the quality of my line be affected by switching to Sky?

The much cheaper price is making me wonder if I will be losing speed, Sky claim their broadband is truly unlimited and never capped or traffic managed.

The quality of your line won't be affected as its the same pair of cables from the exchange to your home. The speed you get is largly down to your distance from the exchange and the attenuation of the line. If anything Sky's kit is more modern than BTs.
All that happens is that tie pair at the exchange is moved to Sky's equipment.

Not sure where you get £27 from. I pay £7.50 / month for the broadband and Talk Freetime, and I paided £119.40 up front for 12 months line rental.
    I'd guess that after the offer you'd be paying £7.50+ £12.50 = £20.
You also get free access to all the Cloud hotspots using your Sky username and password.
    I am a Sky subscriber.

Hi penrhyn, thanks for your reply.
It's this Sky package that I'm looking at http://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-deals

I've looked on U-switch at the actual BT and Sky bb speeds in my area but they both seem to vary widely, some addresses nearer to the exchange than I am are getting slower bb on both BT and Sky :undecided

Ahh I see, do you want Talk unlimited, its £5/month less without it!

Log on to your router and post your line statistics and we can tell whether you are getting the optimum speed for your line.
