Missing diamond in ring

Hi all,
We bought my wife a 3 stone diamond eternity ring worth £1400 in November 2009 from a high street jeweler. She has just noticed that one of the stones is missing. I took it back to the shop but the assistant said that she would have to send it away for assessment. She kept stating that it was unusual to have a manufacturing fault and that usually the ring has been caught in clothing ect. Can someone please explain my rights as I believe that it is not fit for purpose.
Many thanks
Derick

Sorry, but it is down to you to prove that it was a manufacturing fault, and this would rely on you getting a expert report.
I can pretty much guarantee that no expert will give that report as it is pretty much 100% of the time that the ring will snag or get caught if the jewel has feet.0 -
The assessment will clear up if it is accidental damage or a defect with the ring. If it's a defect i'm guessing they will repair it for you. If it accidental damage you will have to pay.0

This exact thing happened to me a couple of months ago. (except it was a solitaire engagement ring)
I was told by the shop we bought it from and another independant jewellers that if it had been faulty it would have broken within weeks of having it, (not months or years)
I had mine replaced under our house insurance.0
