BA Amex 0% credit card

All,

I am having some dificulty with American Express. I signed up for a BA Amex in November / December last year on their offer of 0% for 12/15/18 months (can't remember).

The 0% was needed to pay for some house renovations. I have a balance of just under £4000 on the card.

I received my first bill a bill in February and paid £250 off.

I received my March bill on 29 Feb and there was an interest charge.

I rang them on 29 Feb to complain. They said they would look into it.

In my April bill received end of March the interest was re-credited and no new interest charged.

On 2 April I received a letter saying my "query" had resulted in a review and there is no 0% offer. And that interest at 19.95% will be charged from 30 December 2012.

I have rung them 3 times over the weekend and eventually they accepted that they will treat it as a complaint and investigate. They maintain there was no 0% offer. They have said there is no guarantee interest won't be charged and backdated and that the complaint may take 6-8 weeks to investigate.

What I need to understand is:

1. can anyone find reference to the 0% offer they ran - I can't unfortunately. I swear there was one (I applied with my wife and she remembers it to)

2. What can I do / what rights do I have? Should I just pay off the balance and walk away. I could do that just about but its now become a bit of a principle issue and also its annoying as we have more spending that we planned to make in the next few months.

Any help advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Tom

Hi. Are you sure it was a 0% SPENDING card and not for transfers? I've gotten confused with these from time to time and get really anal about calling up to confirm this stuff! In the meantime, yes - pay it all off as soon as you can to stop racking up the interest. If you've a good credit score then get yourself a new spending card ASAP, if not then you may have to close the BA one first. Check out best cards for spending elsewhere in this site, and sorry to hear about this. One thought I've just had is that there are sometimes different offers on the same company e.g. Virgin have some cards with a fee, some without, others have 0% on balance transfers etc. Are you sure that when you applied for the card they gave you the one you actually asked for?

From my experience with AMEX, they (Customer Service) have usually been very good. Also when ever i have signed up to something with them they have sent me various paperwork. I assume from your response that you no longer have a copy of your signed agreement.

Can you not ask AMEX for a copy of this, as i would assume they must have a copy of this somewhere on thier system by law (to cover themselves even).

Also from what you have written you will not be charged interest until Dec 2012 (is this correct? or a typo?). If this is correct then so long as you are confident you can pay the money off by then don't worry too much.

If it was a type and should have said 2011 then pay it off asap and get another credit card.
