accept offer from RBS on NatWest cc ppi?

I have received a 'gesture of goodwill' on missold ppi from RBS for £2938. From the statements I have in my possession (approx 4 and a half years worth) I'm guessing this is about 6 years worth of payments plus interest.
The card was taken out in 1988 and they say in their offer letter that the refund is for premiums paid between jan 1993 and july 2010 (after which time no further premiums were paid), but I'm sure it is not for every premium paid during that period. I also am unsure of why it doesn't go back to 1988 when the card was taken out.
My questions are:
Do companies only have to pay back 6 years worth of premiums?
If not, is it worth me going to the FOS as the offer is not a full refund of all payments I've made?
Presumably I would have to prove how much I've paid, but would have to rely on a SAR for that evidence and I don't have much faith in RBS holding that information. Maybe that's worth a try though? If they're saying, as they seem to be, that no ppi was paid prior to 1993, then they must have records that show that?
Any advice or other people's experience wold be gratefully received.

Some only go back 6 years without proof, you could do a Sar and see what you get back.

Thanks for that. Think it's worth a try.
Should I send the SAR request to the PPI claims dept at RBS that sent me the offer letter, or should it go to my card (NatWest) customer services?
    Thanks.

I would send it Customer Service.

You could write back to them and ask that they redress more as you had the card from the date you had it,put that you do not think this is a fair offer due to the length of time you had this card, it may not work, but you never know.

Thanks that seems like good advice. I'll let you know how I get on.
