Help for mum

Hi all,

My mum took out an account with Kays Catalogue about 8 years ago and she remembers very clearly paying a load of money for insurance, she thinks she owed them about £1000 in total which she paid off by borrowing money from my grannie.

Kays changed hands and she doesnt have any details about who they then became, she thinks they eventually became Very but they was maybe another name before this.

How on earth would I go about trying to get her account numbers or who would I write too to try and chase a PPI claim (would it even be worth it for £1000 expenditure over approx a 3 year period?)

My mum is disabled and has nothing I would love to claim anything back for her that she is due I am just not great with things like this and would really appreciate any help or advise on where to start! I was tempted to go via a company but reading these forums has really put me off!

She has had loads of other club books over the years but doesnt have any of the paperwork now so I wouldnt be sure how to check out the agreements.. Evans, Simply be, Kalaidascope, Kay and Co, Naturally Close, Ace - would these kinds of club books be classed as 'loans', they are all borrowed money but im just not sure if these kinds of companies even sell PPI!

Please help with your superior knowledge and expertise!!

xx

    Hi there & welcome

First of all check that your mum has any paperwork in relation to the accounts, that is then half the battle.

I assume "maybe" catalogue wise it would be the customer number unless someone else knows otherwise on this one.

Contact/write to the companies you do know of, store cards, on the back of statements should be the addresses you write to.

Going back to the catalogue, if you contact them, they should give the details of who you should write to.

As soon as you got the information/addresses/account numbers, and reasons (for example, if your mum was disabled and/or unemployed) at the time of taking out any of the policies, they were more likely to be a waste of time (worthless to you mum).

You then just complete reclaim questionnaire for each one, as on step 3 below, remember to keep copies.

Meanwhile, anyone who have dealt with any of these companies, maybe they will be along later to advise further, and of their own experience, good luck.
Remember to keep copies of each complaint/questionnaire.

    Good luck.

    Hello there LisaCart

I work for the Financial Ombudsman Service – the free service set up by law to sort out problems between consumers and financial businesses. It is possible to get a form of PPI on a catalogue account and we have seen complaints about this type of policy.

Di3004 is right – if you want to make a complaint you should contact the catalogue company concerned in the first instance. If you're unhappy with the business' response - or if they do not reply within 8 weeks - the ombudsman service may be able to help for free on 0300 123 9 123.

    Thanks

    Samantha

Kay and Company still exists, although it is dormant. This is because it merged its business with Littlewoods.

You may have difficulty pursuing complaint because it ceased trading in 2004 and has never been directly regulated by the FSA so it does not fall under FOS jurisdiction although other Littlewoods companies do.

The registered office for it is

    KAY AND COMPANY LIMITED
    FIRST FLOOR, SKYWAYS HOUSE
    SPEKE ROAD
    SPEKE
    LIVERPOOL
    L70 1AB
