Prep for wall painting

Hi,
We are in the process of buying a house that hasn't been decorated in a long time. We want to paint the hallway in the first few days we move in, before hard to move again furniture blocks it up.
The walls look in good shape, do you need to do any special prep e.g. cleaning the walls and if so with what, or should it be a case of just painting on top of the old colour?
Thanks,
Jo

cleaning with sugar soap, and a quick/light rub down with mild sandpaper should be enough.Get some gorm.0
