Today in Tesco 140g packets of Phileas Fogg crisps (salt flavour only) were marked as 70p (not yellow sticker indicating reduction just normal sticker). I picked up 2 packets and they had 20% free so 168g for price of 140g.

After I had paid noticed I was charged £1.85 per packet so went to CS.

There I was told that the price reduction hadn't worked because you could only have one offer either 70p or 20% extra free.

I pointed out that the 20% extra was free, given by supplier, at no cost to Tesco and Tesco had decided that the selling price for 140g of crisps was 70p and the fact the packets had 20% free was meant to be a FREE bonus for customers. She told me that no whenever an item has a %age free it is not included in any of Tesco's discount offers.

She did agree to give me back twice the difference in selling price as a one off!

I'd have told her I'd take the 70p per bag option, and offered to open the bag and give her the 20% extra free back.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    Whats the problem?

Their usual price is £1.85, they are effectively giving you the choice of 2 offers:

    - discount of one std packet, down to 70p

    or

    - 20% extra at their usual retail price

Expecting to combine these offers by getting 20% extra at the discounted price is a little optimistic.

I just wish companies would stop caving in to unreasonable requests, it just costs the rest of us more!

There was only one shelf edge price, 70p. Not a yellow tag but a white one (yellow indicates price reduction or special offer).

There wasn't 20% off their normal price, there was 20% extra crisps in the packet. The bag says 168g for the normal price of 140g. Tesco were selling the the 140g packets (as indicated on their price tag) for 70p which they had decided was the normal selling price.

Well it unfortunately still doesn't mean you are in the right.

I assume there were two bags on the display, a 140g bag at 70p and a 168g bag at £1.85.

Ignore the fact they are same company, same flavour, they are for all intents and purposes completely different products and Tesco can sell and set the price at whatever they want. It may be the manufacturer is giving the retailer the money back for the 140g packets as its a multi retailer offer, or they want to get rid of them.

Point is, they are two different items, and if there is a ticket missing Tesco still don't have to sell at the price on the ticket.

No only the 20% free bags on the shelf.

If there had been "no 20% free bags" on the shelf it would not have made them a different product. Same product, same barcode.

While a retailer can sell any product for whatever price it likes this package clearly says "FREE" and "for the same price as normal bag" so they cannot charge extra. They can change the selling price for the whole stock on the shelf so you are getting the free offer but not just for the " %age free" stock

IF the barcode is the same, then Tesco are being very naughty here. But if they are different (which seems to be the case seeing as the till rang it up at the £1.85 price.) then they are right but it's their usual underhand tactics.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

I think Tesco just had a wrong price label up as on line same crisps (no 20% free) are £1.85

The barcodes will be different, the member of staff who filled it hasn't completed the 4-point check correctly. Very common for only the 'standard' packs to be linked to the promo and the shelf stacker not to check, the bane of my life......

Go back with your reciept and push for a DTD refund. There is absolutely no way you shouldn't be getting one, and the CSD application even has a reason code for this one!

It will have been a different barcode or an out-of-date SEL.

We always keep an eye out for Finish diswhasher tablets being on Half Price or BOGOF offer. Usually, at the end of this offer, 100% Extra Free stock appears and the offers overlap by a few days.

Same barcode = half price and 100% extra free at the same time!
