Just £80 left...

...and I'll be debt free!!

I took an old necklace to the jewellers today - haven't worn it in years. Must've been given it when I was around 16. They gave me £200 for it!

I've used this to pay off my Littlewoods account which was at £229. Littlewoods also said they will keep my account open, with a small limit, so I can build my credit rating with it :)

I now owe just £82.20 to the Job Centre for an old crisis loan from 2010. They aren't even chasing me for it - I just remembered that I had it. I will try and sell some stuff to pay that off.

I started off with around £3k in debt in September 2011 - and now it's almost all paid off! Thank you MSE community! :)

  • Well done..such an inspiring story! It will help keep me plodding on until I reach my (very distant) goal. I have sold a lot of old gold too- its surprising what it's worth these days. Hope you get rid of the little bit of debt you have left to totally put you at ease! x

  • I am still learning to budget properly - and not spend money on random un needed things. I also need to learn what I do and don't need. I feel guilty about buying a £5 polo t-shirt (I need new t-shirts etc), but I don't feel guilty about spending £30 for a ticket to a gig! And I need to budget properly regarding University - I spend way to much on food. Like £6 a day - which is about £18 a week. I'm just such a fussy eater!!

I am keeping the Littlewoods account, but setting up DD to pay it off in full each month, my limit is £250, and apparently it'll increase the more I stick to payments etc. Which is good for incase the washing machine breaks or something I suppose!

I'm looking forward to a debt free future (still have student loans but I don't count those!)

I honestly believe that the journey doesn't end here, and I will defo be sticking around doing some challenges and so on, and learning to budget like a normal person! Being just 24 I believe I still have some time to learn :)

    Xmas Saver!
Have you thought about opening a savings account. Its just as rewarding seeing the amount grow as it is watching your debt decrease. You have obviously got used to living on less while paying off debt, so it wouldn't leave you any worse off !!
I found saving can be as addictive as spending. Often when I go to buy something I find that I would rather put the money away. It doesn't need to be a proper saving account, another card account is just as good. That way you can withdraw money easily if you need it, and can get a balance when you want.
As sad as it may be, I often get a balance from hole in wall just to see it in writing. It makes me feel good !
Also if washing machine etc breaks you won't have to get in debt to replace or mend it !
  • I would close the littlewoods account

The freedom of knowing you have no lines of available credit really is something
