in Cutting tax
Hello wonder if anybody can help i have received various P800 tax calulations from HMRC recently :
i) year 2009-2010 they tell me i had two employments in this year (when i didnt) and they same that my salary was double what it was and i owe them a large four figure sum.
I contact HRMC who provides the informatiion they hold , one is for my employer in 2009-2010 and the other is an employer who i left in 2003.
Does this mean that an employer is saying i still have outstanding taxes for 2003 or before ?
Should HMRC not have informed me about this before now if this was for reported against 2009-2010 tax year ?
is there a maximum no of years they can claim back tax ?
Any suggestions how i should proceed ?

This is a clear error, depressingly common. Unless the person on the other end of a phone is a complete numptie - depressingly possible - they should realise that virtually no-one on PAYE goes from £25k one year up to £50k the next and then back to £25k.
If they carry on being silly, insist on seeing their evidence under the Data Protection Act. then you can trash it and tell them what prats they've been. Appeal any assessments or attempts by any other route to get the money off you.
I had hoped this sort of total howler had been stopped, as it's been a few months now since the last one. I stand by every word of the tagline I put at the end of every post. This sort of blunder is easy peasy to pick up manually or by half-decent program writing. My payroll system, for example, warns me in big red letters if this month's net pay is going to be over 150% or less than 50% of last month's. How hard can it be?Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -

1) No - just the fact the HMRC system still shows a link to that employer. As likely employer error as HMRC.
2) They're grinding their way back through in excess of 100M records (35m employees with up to 6 years of data each) courtesy of a new PAYE system that's capable (some caution on interpretation there) of doing that and working out under / over payments. So it takes a while - as it has a day job as well.
3) Up to 6 years in normality.
4) Ring them and tell them - and that they will have to contact the other employer if full proof is needed. As it's unreasonable that you would still have the P45 after 9 years. Make a formal complaint if they decline. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
