Tax code help please! 543 L/1 and 603L /1

Just been looking into my 2008/09 payslips and noticed I was taxed as below,

Sept - 2008
Tax Code: 543 L/1
Basic Pay: 974.40
Tax: 104.20
NI:57.35
NET PAY: 812.85

I then moved on to a different company and my tax code changed to 603L/1 from Oct 2008 to March 2009

Tax Code: 603 L/1
Basic Pay: 1666.67
Tax: 232.60
NI:133.50
NET PAY: 1300.57

Could someone please advice on this? I just want to be sure that my tax is correct, I don't want to have paid too little or too much.

The 543 moving to 603, from Sept of that year, was correct for everyone on the basic personal allowance.

What is probably not correct is the Month 1 following the Code. But you will need to post the full pay / tax for the whole year before anyone could work that out.
