Sewing Patterns

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is in the right place-feel free to move if it isn't.
I have acquired a sewing machine and I am not too sure where to start-I am a complete beginner but thought I could experiment with some sewing patterns. Does anyone know any good websites where I could download any or would I have to pay for them?
Many thanks

Hi beach, you could try a simple web search for free patterns, I found this for you,
http://www.allcrafts.net/sewing.htm
there is beginners help on there as well, although I am sure if you get stuck someone here will be able to help, I recently dug out my machine, and have lined all the curtains in the house with blackout lining, I hate it when the room is to light in the spring/summer mornings! and with BB going to bed early every night I thought it would be a good idea!
Have fun!Sig ah Sig Ahhh0 -
You can often pick up patterns cheaply at boot sales, or charity shops. Or try ebay if you can't find what you're after to download for free.0

There are often simple patterns in magazines such as prima although I haven't seen one of those personally for yonks!
Try the library, I know that such books are often dated but it might give you some inspiration.
What about looking to see if there is an evening class or even a one-day course at your local college?7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone. TBH, I'm not sure where to start. I think a skirt might be best??
Will have a look and see what I can find.
Can anyone recommend any good books/websites to help me get started in sewing and the basics?0 -
Hi
I've had a quick browse on the internet and found this website https://www.isew.co.uk there may be a few articles of interest on there and there is a Beginners guide. http://www.isew.co.uk/sewing_techniques/beginner%5C's_guide_to_sewing-c-00189.htm
When I learnt to sew years ago, I bought the 'Make It Easy' bi-weeking publication. But I don't know if there is anything like that at the moment. However, If you go to a shop that sells patterns have a look for beginners patterns. Simplicity and New Look do them, and some of the other makes do too! You could start with a Dirndl Skirt, which is two square panels, gathered with a waist band and a zip!
Good luck!

An evening class is a great idea, as you'll have someone to ask b4 you panic too much (if you're like me!! ) You'll also learn how to cut patterns properly & they should teach you how to sort out any problems you may come across with the machine. If you don't already have it, try to download a copy of the machine instruction manuel. You may want to practice on lining material or remnants at first, or you may be braver/more confident.
Classes should be starting up again after Easter if that's an option for you.0
