First adult passport

Hi all,

I was just wondering what everyone's experience was of getting their first adult passport. How long did it take?
The reason I am asking is that I am due to go to america in 7 weeks and 4 days. I applied for my passport yesterday (as soon as I knew we were going) and they say to leave six weeks.
I am very worried as it is cutting it fine. I haven't actually booked my place yet as it does warn not to book until you have a passport, which will leave things very tight and I know I also need to get an ETSA as soon as I get my passport.

Any comments would be great. I hope I am stressing for nothing

I think it all depends upon how busy they are. It says on the Direct Gov. site to apply with six weeks to spare, so you should be fine: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/Applyingforyourfirstadultpassport/DG_174098

It took me approx 6 weeks from the date I sent my application. All 1st passport applicants now have to have an official interview, and this may have lengthened the process for me as there isn't a passport office in my county. It's worth spending the extra to have the post office check your paperwork before sending- mine was incomplete due to both parents being deceased and therefore no passport numbers for them. The post office let me know I had to apply for their wedding certificate first.
The interview was very "informal" though and nothing to worry about.
  • Thanks for the replies.
I am still really nervous that it's not going to show up, but there's not alot I can do about it tbh

my daughter had a child passport and got her adult one very quickly but her partner had never had a passport and his took just over 6 weeks as he had to have an interview and the person who countersigned the form had to be contacted. He was panicking as they were due to go away and he thought he would not get it on time.
  • I did have a child passport, but I no longer have it and it is in the wrong surname anyway.

People do not need to worry about passport interviews-they ask very basic questions-or they do at Blackburn! LOL.My elderly mother sailed through and she's 79!

If you have ever had a passport as a child, even if its in a different name I think its then classed as a replacement (if lost) or a renewel.

Did you ring the passport office?, the post office are ok, but they dont always have the correct information.

Its not a first passport then - its a replacement. You will need to fill in form LS01 showing the name that was on the passport that was lost. You will also have to provide details of your change of name,
Make sure you get your form countersigned.

If you have had a passport before you do not need to go for an interview. You will also be eligible for the Fast-track service which will give you your passport back within 7 days if you want it quickly
